Journalist-turned-filmmaker Subhash Kapoor tasted success with his second film Phas Gaye Re Obama (2010) and repeated it with Jolly LLB (2013). And now he is back with Guddu Rangeela with Arshad Warsi and Amit Sadh. “Guddu (Arshad) and Rangeela (Amit) are two orchestra singers who earn their bread and butter in Haryana. They like to believe their ‘jodi’ as Ram-Lakhan or Jai-Veeru. But, this is just the outside view of the story. The central thread of Guddu Rangeela is about a rampant issue in Haryana and Western UP: Honour Killing,” says Kapoor.

Such themes generally don’t have much scope for ‘light in nature’ content, an argument Kapoor doesn't agree with. Says he: “We all like comedy. Any story with a slight dose of humour can become a memorable one. Also, I like to tell my stories with a tinge of humour. It’s a great tool as it achieves a nice penetration. I like to deal with real people, real situation, and if humour will not be not there then it might become a little boring. I want to avoid that possibility.”

He adds: “You must have seen Ronit Roy’s character in the trailer. That must have given you an idea about the central conflict line of the film. Though the film is aimed at entertaining you, it will deal with many things ranging from Khap Panchayats to honour killings. It is wrapped up in a comic envelope but it will also touch upon some real issues.”

His stint as a political journalist in Delhi, Kapoor says, helped him a lot in looking at things differently. "I served as a political journalist for a long time in Delhi. That gave me a chance to explore many areas and several issues from close quarters. Also, I don’t want to make films on subjects and people I haven’t seen by my own eyes. This time also, you’re going to see realistic people of Haryana and Western UP,” added Kapoor.

Kapoor worked with Arshad Warsi in Jolly LLB, but Amit Sadh is a new entrant in his filmmaking career. “That’s the idea of casting him. See, we expect Sachin Tendulkar to hit a six, but when Bhajji does it, we get surprised. You’ll be surprised to see Amit Sadh in Guddu Rangeela. Arshad is known for his comic timing, but when a suave looking guy like Amit does it, we like it even more. He was serious in Kai Po Che, but this time he is comic despite being deep. Who would have thought that a Nawab would play Langada Tyagi before Omkara!”

The trailer presents Aditi Rao Hydari in a non-glamorous look. “She is as important as any other primary character in the film. In fact, she is the ringmaster of the lot. People have complaints that my films don’t have scope for strong female characters, but this time they won’t be complaining.”

Guddu Rangeela will hit the screens on July 3, 2015.
