Dimple Kapadia is one of those few veteran actors who is still very much active in the film world. In this interview, she praises young talent in the industry, talks about her family and her relationship with Akshay Kumar.

You have been doing quite a few films lately. What keeps you motivated?
I am a very lazy person. But, I am really lucky and blessed to have got the opportunity to work with youngsters in their first films. I did Farhan Akhtar, Zoya Akhtar and Homi Adjania’s first films, and was part of Gurmmeet Singh’s second film.

Many veteran actors, including Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit, are making their comebacks. Can we expect similar competition among senior actresses as well?
No, because first and foremost I don’t belong to their batch. I belong to an older batch. I don’t think I can compete with them in any way. They are special and that’s why they are who they are.

Will we see Twinkle returning to cinema as well?
Never. Nothing can bring her back to cinema.

How different is the film-making process now from your time?
It’s very different. We used to take two years to complete a film, and sometimes, we used to be told on the sets that the scenes are still being written. Everything today is pre-planned. All the departments contribute equally to the creative process now. Earlier, these discussions were limited to directors and actors only.

Who, according to you, in the current lot is the most talented actor?
I think Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh are doing a fabulous job. I have worked with Deepika, and I think she is very talented, focused, disciplined and beautiful.

How supportive has Akshay Kumar been after Rajesh Khanna passed away?
Akshay Kumar is more than a son to me. What I love about him is that there is never a dull moment with him. He is always up to some nonsense. I remember once I was trying to call a pandit (priest) and called Akshay instead. I didn’t see the number properly and dialled it incorrectly. Someone answered in a sleepy voice and said ‘ek kaam karo apne jamai ki puri seva karo’ (Serve your son-in-law). That’s when I realised it was Akshay and not the pandit. He is mad and very naughty and I love that.‘Akshay is always up to some Nonsense’
