In a career spanning 20 odd years, Akshay Kumar has acted prolifically, with over a 100 films to his name. In a candid chat, he talks about how he manages to do so many movies, loving the ‘action hero’ tag, his equation with Katrina Kaif and why wife Twinkle won’t make an acting comeback.

Do you support the usual action-comedy brand of cinema because these films always make money?

I have earned enough money in my life. When I started my career, for about 10 years, I told myself I want to make money. Now, I just want to do different roles. Whether it’s action in Rowdy Rathore (2012), playing a loser in Housefull (2010) or playing God in OMG: Oh My God (2012), I want to jump from one genre to another. I don’t want people to say that ‘Akshay Kumar is an action or a comedy hero’.

What made you take up Special 26?

When the script first came to me, I didn’t find it impressive, so I rejected it. About six months later, I was requested to hear it again. Then I told myself, ‘I rejected this script? I must have gone mad to turn down such a story’. Now, I have learnt that you should always ‘hear’ a script, not ‘read’ it. It’s not a typical Bollywood film. I have done action in Special 26, but it’s not mindless.

Are you the busiest actor in Bollywood?

Ever since I started my career, I have been busy with four to five releases a year. I enjoy being busy. It’s an easy calculation: one film takes 60 days; multiply that by four, and you work for 240 days. So, out of 365, you are still left with 115 days in a year. Also, I take one month off around June. And I don’t work on Saturdays and Sundays.

How has Akshay the actor changed over the years?

My weight is still the same. My fitness level is just as high. The only thing that has changed is my bank balance (smiles). That has increased. And over the years, I have matured as an actor.

Does Twinkle plan to make an acting comeback?

No, she doesn’t want to make a comeback. She isn’t interested.

You and Katrina Kaif seem to have stopped working together. Has your personal equation changed?

Katrina is still a good friend. It’s all a media-created hoopla. Why would I stop working with her?'
