If you are a fan of Manmohan Desai’s Amar Akbar Anthony (AAA, 1979), Mere Brother Ki Dulhan (MBKD) will bring back old memories. In a funny sequence from the film, Katrina Kaif and Imran Khan pay a tribute to the masala entertainer while dressing up like Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh.
“MBKD is set in the Delhi, Agra and Dehradun belt. And the region has strong cultural influences. So, you will see Imran, Katrina and other actors doing the aadab several times — like in Amar Akbar Anthony — in the film’s sequence. Plus, I have always loved and grown up watching films like AAA. And since I had an opportunity to bring in that nostalgic-retro feel, I thought, ‘why not?’ And it has turned out to be very funny. It’s my way of paying tribute to such great films,” says director Ali Abbas Zafar.
In the film, Ali has incorporated moves of current super-stars like Aamir Khan, Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan in the title song of the film. And the debutant director is happy with the results. “Whoever watched the film has told me that it delivers more than what it promises through promos and trailers,” says Ali, who has assisted Kabir Khan on New York (2009).
As the film gets set for release on September 9, Ali admits he is nervous and excited. “It’s a new emotion. Maybe, the next time I will be a more relaxed,” he smiles.
