With his Shahid Kapoor-starrer, Phata Poster Nikhla Hero, up for release, Rajkumar Santoshi is already on an announcement spree. The filmmaker recently declared that he was scripting a sequel to the Aamir Khan-Salman Khan comedy, Andaz Apna Apna (1994). And now, we’ve learnt that he has written the screenplay of another film, based on the Partition of India and Pakistan. Anil Kapoor has been roped in to play the lead role.
Santoshi has bought the rights to a play, which will be adapted for the film. “My next is based on a play called Jis Lahore Nahi Dekhya Woh Jamiya Hi Nahin, which is about the Indo-Pak Partition. It was first staged in 1990 and has travelled to cities like New York and Washington. I have bought the rights and written the screenplay. It will be a big-budget, dramatic film,” he says.
Anil, who has worked with the filmmaker in Pukar (2000) and Lajja (2001), is also thrilled. “Yes, I’m working with Santoshi again. It’s his most ambitious film till date. The script has always been very close to him, and he has wanted to make this film for a long time now,” confirms the actor.
Santoshi believes that this is the perfect time to make the film and spread the message of peace. “It talks about tolerance and living together in harmony. Today, there is so much intolerance amongst people. This film is the need of the hour,” he says.
