Highlight Story

Buzz is that Priyanka Chopra and Ranbir Kapoor’s soon-to-release

Anjaana Anjaani

is inspired by the telly show,

Friends.

Director Siddharth Anand denies having made the statement: “All I said was that you will fall in love with Keira (Priyanka Chopra) and Akaash (Ranbir Kapoor), in much the same way that you did with Rachel (Jennifer Aniston), Monica (Courtney Cox Arquette), Ross (David Schwimmer) and Joey (Matt LeBlanc) in

Friends

. You want to touch them, hang out with them, get to know them and be friends with them.”

Wife’s idea

The story idea, he adds, came from his wife Mamta. Back in May-June 2009, soon after

Bachna Ae Haseeno

, Anand was wondering what to do next since all conflicts in love stories, be it the rich-poor divide, family feuds or relationship-related, had been exhausted. That’s when Mamta who has been creatively involved with all his projects, threw up an idea. That is the opening scene of the film.

So is it their love story then? “No, it is a contemporary love story,” he retorts. “Mamta, like me, was an assistant director. We met on the sets of Kunal Kohli’s

Mujhse Dosti Karoge

, and in true

filmi

style, love blossomed and we got married. She is my best friend, a stylist who has designed costumes for Aamir Khan, Shahid Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan, given me a story idea, written a story for herself and some day, will make a wonderful director.”

Quiz him on his choice of actors and he says working with Kapoor is addictive and he’d like to do another film with him soon. As for Priyanka, he remembers that the first time he met her for a story narration she replicated his

biryani

order. “I thought she’ll have a few spoonfuls but she tucked away more than I did,” he laughs. “Even when we were shooting at New York’s Café Lalo, along with the rest of us, Priyanka happily gorged on their trademark cheesecake. But while we must have put on 10 kgs, she didn’t put on even an ounce. I must learn her gym secrets.”

So are Chopra or Kapoor friends or ‘good friends’? “All this talk about a real-life romance between the two is just fodder for the media,” he insists. “When you are on a long outdoor, it’s natural for co-stars to go for dinner sometimes or catch a movie. And immediately, everyone jumps to conclusions. But these two are mature and take gossip in their stride.”
