For HT’s film-critic, Anupama Chopra, hosting a show is not new. But for a show such as Masterclass — an innovative concept on her YouTube channel, Film Companion — unlike her previous shows, she takes a look at the life journey of a film star. Starring in her second episode, Hrithik Roshan revealed unknown facts about his growing years, his entry into cinema and things he’s learnt over the years.

Attended by several film students, the show gave many of them a chance to speak to him. Hrithik, too, made for a perfect guest — he joked, laughed, was theatrical in his narrations of childhood stories, and amused many with his quick one-liners. Here are some excerpts:

Anupama: Hrithik, you also had a phase when you considered studying special effects at a polytech college. Why was there so much confusion?

Hrithik: Yes. Scary time of my life. Okay, I wanted to be an actor. My father, thinking about all the struggle that he had been through, warned me against it. He said, "You must have something to fall back upon". So, I said, "Okay. What do I do to fall back upon? If I don’t work as an actor, what do I do?" Uday Chopra was my best friend, we were always doing things together. Computer classes, this class, that class. So, I got him excited about doing special effects. I said, "Let’s go do special effects, man. Let’s go to America for like a year; do special effects. And then came into my life, Mr Kader Khan. Lovely man. Made my life hell. Hell. He told my father, "If your son wants to go and do special effects, he must go to a Polytechnic college. One college, Bhagubhai Polytechnic is close by, your son must go there." My dad came home and said, "You have to do this. Bhagubhai." I went, "Bhagubhai? What is Bhagubhai?" He said, "It’s a Polytechnic College. You go to this college and when you come out, you will be able to fix an AC. You will be able to fix the fridge." Am I supposed to be excited? I don’t want to fix any AC. I don’t want to fix a fridge. I said, "Now what do I do?" I took my car, got to Bhagubhai. Very surreptitiously I took the turn, came around the bend and saw the college. I am seeing all the students going inside. They stick their comb in the ear. They used to make sure that they looked great while they fixed the fridge. I started looking at that and I am like, "I can’t do this." I called up Uday and said, "Uday, dude, listen man, I have found the answer. If we have to go do special effects, we have to go to Bhagubhai, man. It’s super cool dude! We will be able to do everything! Listen I am here waiting outside the college. Come here now!"

Anupama: And he came?

Hrithik: Yes, he came full excited. So, he came and he sat. I am trying to build them up with words. "Dude, we are going to do this, we are going to do that" and he is looking behind and saying, "But dude, what is this dude? I said, "Yeah! That’s the college! He is saying, "I am not going here". I said, "Uday, dude, why?" He said, "I don’t need to go here yaar. My father is okay. I will go straight to the special effects thing." And I said, "Uday, what will I do here alone man?" So, that went on for like some two-three days. I thought, "This is not happening. It will never happen. My father will have to deal with Kader Khan on his own; some way or the other. So that was the end of my special effects thing. I found another friend who was going for hotel management to Switzerland. So I called him up. I said. "Listen! This hotel management... is it good? "He said, "Yes, it’s good. We are staying here at this college, they have got a dorm and stuff. It’s nice. The snow and everything." I got excited because of the snow and because of who I have got as a company over there... and I realised at the end of it, all that I am not interested in all this. I sat down and said, "This is going to weaken me." Moment of revelation happened then, and I said, "No. I don’t need that safety net. And that’s when I went up to my dad and said, "Papa, you have struggled for 20 years in your life. I am your son. Trust me. This is what I want to do. And I don’t want the safety net. In fact, if you give me a safety net, I will tear it down. I don’t want it. I want to know if I have it in me! I want to know if I will not be able to fly if you are going to weaken me with the safety net."
