On March 11, producer-director Anurag Kashyap wrapped up his political thriller, Gangs Of Wasseypur, revolving around the coalmine mafia. The film supposedly has its muse in Bihar politician Surajbhan Singh who was convicted for murder in 2008. While director friend Tigmanshu Dhulia essays the role of Singh in the film that will release in two parts, Manoj Bajpayee plays a desi Godfather like Marlon Brando, the mine owner.
Meanwhile, today, another thriller to be directed by Anurag is being announced and will go on the floors in the second half of the year. It will be shot in Mumbai and features Rahul Bhat, best remembered as Sameer, Heena’s husband in the TV serial of the same name. Bhatt has produced serials like Tum Dena Saath Mera (2009), Meri Doli Teri Angana (2007) and Chhu Kar Mere Man Ko (2008) and has also acted in films like Yeh Mohabattein (2002) and Nayee Padosan (2003).“Anurag’s choice of Rahul was a surprise for all of us. But casting is the director’s perogative and Anurag is confident Rahul is his protagonist,” admits co-producer Shahnaab Aalam.
Internationally acclaimed director Bill Bennett is also considering Rahul for a major role in his Indian movie. Bennett is expected to be at the conference but Anurag won’t be present as he is away in London.
Quizzed on his new leading man, Anurag says, “I’ve known Rahul since my struggling days when we lived next door to each other. But I only discovered his potential when I started interacting with him. I believe he’s the right choice because his life’s experiences are quite similar to that of my character. And I was impressed with the mature and objective way he responded to my narration.
