It is common knowledge now that Ranbir Kapoor is playing the lead role in Imtiaz Ali's next, Rockstar. And while Ranbir’s film will open only later this year, he already has competition from Atif Aslam. The Pakistani singer, who has crooned hits like Tera Hone Laga Hoon… and Tu Jaane Na… for Ranbir in Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani (2009), will play a rockstar too in his debut acting venture, Bol.
Ask Atif about it and he only states that he “received a good response (for his rockstar acts) from my fans.” He adds with a smile: “More than anything else, people have appreciated my performance in the film and the songs of Bol. It is a really exciting project for me.”
Bol, releasing on August 31, is a social drama based in Lahore and aims at highlighting the miserable state of women in some parts of Pakistan. Atif, who plays a rockstar, is in love with a girl hailing from one such family. Acclaimed director Shoaib Mansoor of Khuda Kay Liye (2007) fame has directed the movie. The film also stars Pakistani TV anchor Mahira Khan.
Although Atif has already made on-screen appearances in his music albums, this is the first time he will be acting in a full-fledged movie. And unlike a newcomer, Atif wasn’t been nervous in front of the camera. “It was a lot of fun shooting for this film,” says Atif, who will next be heard singing for Shahid Kapoor in Pankaj Kapur’s upcoming film, Mausam.
