It’s known by now that TV host-actor Ayushmann Khurrana will make his film debut with John Abraham’s maiden production, Vicky Donor. But not many know that he has also composed and sung a Punjabi song titled ‘Paani…’ for the Shoojit Sircar project.

“I had written the song way back in 2003 while I was college, along with my friend Rochak Kohli who’s now heading a radio station. It’s a love ballad. And since we haven’t had a Punjabi love ballad in Bollywood for a long time, it’s going to be interesting,” says Ayushmann.

Ayushmann plays a Punjabi boy from Lajpat Nagar (New Delhi) in the film, so he feels the song goes very well with the mood and setting. “I had been thinking of using the song in some way — perhaps putting it up on YouTube with an amateurish video. But this was an awesome chance to use it in a superb way,” he chuckles.

Ask him how things fell in place and he explains, “One day, I was sitting with Shoojitda discussing which music director to rope in, among other things. I happened to be carrying my guitar that day. So I randomly told him about the song and the fact that I had written it eight-nine years ago. He asked me to play it and ended up loving it. So we used it in the film.”

Producer John also praised him in a tongue-in-cheek manner. “He came to the studio when I was recording it and joked, ‘Ayushmann, I didn’t know you were talented.’ Now, I will try and sing at least one song in all my films,” says the debutant actor who stars along side Yammi Gautam and Annu Kapoor in the film that deals with the issue of sperm donation in India.
