It’s been a long absence from Bollywood after Satya (1998), but south actor JD Chakravarthy is back with another Ram Gopal Varma film, Bhoot Returns. And after this, he’s planning another film within the same genre. “Ramuji and I will do another horror film together, but right now, I’m waiting for this one to release,” he says.
The actor is still known for his role in RGV’s Satya, which he considers a compliment. In fact, since his debut in the director’s Shiva (1989), the two have worked together on 27 films. “But people have a misconception that I only work with him,” he says.
What’s kept him away from Bollywood?
“Down south, if I commit to four films at once, it’s difficult to come to Mumbai for just one, so people sometimes assume that I don’t like to work in Bollywood,” explains Chakravarthy. But Bhoot Returns prompted him to return. The actor says, “You have to watch the film to know the difference between a horror film and Bhoot Returns. Ramuji has come up with a very unique audio design, which coupled with 3D, is outstanding.”
Chakravarthy also reveals that a prequel to Satya may just be in the offing. “I spoke to Ramuji about it and he liked the idea, so there’s a chance of it happening,” he explains. Clarifying RGV’s comment about not retaining the original cast for the second installment, the actor says, “I died at the end of Satya, so I think the curiosity is more about whether the film is happening, rather than who is in it.”
