In Bajirao Mastani's first trailer, Ranveer Singh is Maratha general Bajirao who fought Mughals for establishment of a Hindu empire. Priyanka Chopra plays his supportive wife Kashibai. Deepika Padukone is the wildcard, the Muslim warrior princess Mastani.

The trailer which released on Thursday shows Ranveer and Deepika battle and fall in love; they dress in regal finery and they don the battle fatigues.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Bajirao Mastani's trailer proves one thing for sure: The filmmaker has lost none of his panache for scale and grandeur. Long shots of palaces and jewel-adorned women, Ranveer practically flying over the head of soldiers to attack a man on an elephant, Deepika in battle regalia as she launches fire-tipped arrows and Priyanka romancing the diyas a la Aishwarya in Devdas - every staple we expect from Bhansali.

Ranveer looks assured as Bajirao, the man on a mission who falls in love expectedly. It is Deepika as Mastani who steals the show. From a warrior to a lover to a mother, she plays all the roles effortlessly.

There is just one dialogue in the trailer: "Bajirao ne Mastani se mohabbat ki hai, ayyashi nahi."

Here's how the story of the trailer unravels...

The trailer opens with a battle sequence as an intent-looking Ranveer leads his armies.

Battle is a leitmotif of the trailer. Love takes a backseat as the lead shows their skills with swords and arrows.

There are a lot of sumptuous scenes of courts and palaces in the film too.

What looks like a victory procession is another wide shot.

And here's one of Bhansali's favourite scenes: his heroine and her diya.

Not just Ranveer, Deepika also shows us her swordsmanship in the film.

As the Muslim warrior princess Mastani, she is the wild card of the film.

From a warrior to mother, she fits in all roles perfectly.

The highlight of the trailer is this scene where Ranveer jumps across a void to attack a man on an elephant. Baahubali, much?
