Part 2 of an 11-week special looking at events that shaped the last decade in Bollywood.

Some made it big, some claimed the small-time and a few faded into obscurity. In part 2 of Take 11, we look at female actors who were awarded Best Debutante awards in the past decade — what was said when they made their entry and where they are today. In 2010, the buzz was all around star child Sonakshi Sinha, who debuted with the superhit Dabangg. Whose footsteps should Sonakshi follow so that her career doesn’t start with a shelf life?



2001 Kareena Kapoor

She has been talked about for her looks and affairs. Being a Kapoor scion, getting into films was easy but she has proved her acting mettle and won accolades in Chameli, Jab We Met and 3 Idiots. Only future will tell how well she’ll do in the ones to come — Agent Vinod, Bodyguard, RA.1, and Short Term Shaadi.



Sonakshi2002 Gracy Singh

Debut: Lagaan

Hits: 3

Flops: 7

She shot to fame with a television show called Amanat. Gracy won appreciation for her roles in Lagaan and Munnabhai MBBS. Contrary to expectations that she would make a successful career, Gracy is nowhere to be seen in Bollywood but is doing films down south.



2003 Esha Deol

Debut:Koi Mere Dil Se Poochhe

Hits: 6

Flops: 20

Esha has been absent from the limelight ever since her last film Hijack released in 2008. Esha changed her girl-next-door image in her debut to a hot bod in Dhoom but even that didn’t help. Now the only film in her hand is Tell Me Oh Khuda, her mom’s production.

2004 Lara Dutta
Debut: Andaaz

Hits: 6
Flops: 21
Former Miss Universe Lara Dutta has mostly done multi- starrer films that focused more on her looks than her acting. Now the actor has only one film in hand i.e. Banda Yeh Bindaas Hai. Also, Lara will be marrying tennis ace Mahesh Bhupati this February, which might prove a setback to her career.

2005 Gayatri Joshi
Debut: Swades

Flops: 1
A model-turned-actor, Gayatri got appreciated for role in Ashutosh Gowariker’s Swades opposite Shah Rukh Khan. However, the film flopped at the box office. She got married in August 2005, a year after the film, and is now settled in Las Vegas with her husband and two kids.

2006 Vidya Balan
Debut: Parineeta

Flops: 5
She is currently basking in the success of No One killed Jessica and has won the best actor award twice in a row — for Ishqiya this year and Pa last year. Vidya will be seen next in Sujoy Ghosh’s Kahaani and Ekta Kapoor’s The Dirty Picture in which she plays Silk Smitha.

2007 Kangna Ranaut

She had a mixed year with the success of Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai , but the failure of her next two releases Knock Out and No Problem. Kangna, who won the national award for Fashion last year, now has Tanu Weds Manu, Game, Dhamaal 2, Power and Rascals in her kitty.

2008 Deepika Padukone
Debut: Om Shanti Om

Flops: 6
Deepika burst into the scene with a super hit film opposite Shah Rukh Khan. Her next Bachna Ae Haseeno opposite her then-boyfriend Ranbir Kapoor, was a semi hit. Last year she had four flops and a hit with Houseful. She now has Dum Maaro Dum, Race 2, Aarakshan and Housefull 2.

2009 Asin Thottumkal
Debut: Ghajini

Hits: 1
Flops: 1
The actor was already a sensation down south before she did Ghajini with Aamir Khan. The charisma did not last long with her next film London Dreams opposite Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn bombed at the box office. She has only one film now, Bodyguard with Salman Khan.

2010 Mahi Gill

Flops: 3
Mahi was seen in Hawayein and Khoya Khoya Chaand, but made her grand Bollywood entry with Dev D, in which she played Paaro. She followed it with a powerful role in Gulaal. She was last seen in Dabangg opposite Arbaaz Khan. She is now working on Utt Patang and Sahib, Biwi aur Ghulam.

2011 Sonakshi Sinha
Debut: Dabangg

Flop: Nil
Sonakshi played the lead role in the biggest film of 2010 - Dabangg opposite Salman Khan. After a queue of filmmakers lined up to sign her, the actor even hiked her price to a crore. She now has Race 2 with Saif Ali Khan and John Abraham and Joker with Akshay Kumar in her kitty.
