Rumours about Lata Mangeshkar singing a “thumri about love, longing and separation” for film-maker Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s next, Padmavati, have been doing the rounds for a while now.
However, when we asked the veteran singer about the same, she was caught unaware. “Nahi, aisi koi baat nahi hai (there’s nothing like that). We haven’t spoken about this (of singing in his next film),” says Mangeshkar.

Sanjay has often spoken about his admiration for the veteran singer. “Lataji defines beauty for me. To me, she represents the Shringar Rasa in all its glory,” Bhansali had said in an earlier interview. Mangeshkar says, “I know Bhansaliji very well. In fact, I spoke to him recently, but neither did he say anything [about the song] nor did I ask,” says Mangeshkar.
However, the 87-year-old is aware about the rumours. “I have been told that such articles have come out in the papers. I noticed some posts on Facebook too,” she says.
Ask her when will she make a comeback to Hindi films, and she says, “Main kaise bataun (how do I say)? I hope that a film is made, which has a song for me. Only then will my fans get the chance to listen to me.”
