Big B in serious denial mode, refutes signing film opposite Sridevi, says Rajkumar Santoshi’s Power not shelved. Roshmila Bhattacharya tells more.

Amitabh Bachchan admits that he’s heard the rumours about Sridevi making a comeback with him in a film produced by Balki. The directorial debut of Balki’s wife Gauri Shinde, the film reportedly revolves around a woman’s search for her own identity after several years of marriage and will bring back the Khuda Gawah pair after 19 years. “Yes, I have read about this in the media but I have not yet been enlightened on it by either Balki or his wife,” says the star from Bhopal, where he’s currently filming Prakash Jha’s Aarakshan. On March 23, Bachchan joins the cast of Bbuddah that reunites him with his Baghban and Babul Dream Girl, Hema Malini, and his Aks co-star, Raveena Tandon. The action movie is in the ‘angry young man’ mould that made him Bollywood’s icon with films like Zanjeer, Deewar, Trishul, Muqaddar Ka Sikander and Laawaris to name a few.

Which one of these has been the most memorable? ”The epithet of the ‘angry young man’ came from the media so they would be better placed to determine which role they relished. For me, all my films have been memorable and rewarding. But I do not think that Muquddar Ka Sikander or Lawaaris were films in the action genre, they were more dramatic, emotional and romantic films,” he says. At the age of 69, Bachchan is ready for some daredevil stunts, not just in Bbuddah but also Rajkumar Santoshi’s Power that has him playing the protagonist, a vigilant cop. Buzz is that after Ajay Devgn dropped out, the film has been shelved. Bachchan denies this, “Since the producer hasn’t told me that, for me the project is still on. Yes, one keeps hearing about its fate now and then but then, one keeps hearing a lot of things.”

Rajkumar Santoshi is also directing Ladies & Gentlemen with son Abhishek in the lead. The film is supposed to be a remake of Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s comic caper, Golmaal. "Since I’ve not heard the story yet, I can’t comment on it," says Bachchan. "But one thing is for sure, it’s not a remake of Golmaal. That is another film Abhishek is doing with Rohit Shetty and Ajay Devgn. They have purchased the rights from Hrishida’s production house."
