Amitabh Bachchan has worked with a fair share of Bengali directors in the past, from Hrishikesh Mukherjee (films such as Anand; 1971, and Abhimaan; 1973, among others), to Shakti Samanta (Barsaat Ki Ek Raat; 1981) and more recently, with Rituparno Ghosh (The Last Lear; 2007).

Now, in what seems to be a bit of a coincidence, the veteran actor has back-to-back projects lined up with contemporary Bengali directors. Bachchan is currently shooting for his debut television show with a new Bengali director — the show is being popularly referred to as Anurag Kashyap’s (he is the creative director overseeing the project), but is actually being helmed by Ribhu Dasgupta, who made Michael (2011), starring Naseeruddin Shah. “Ribhu Dasgupta has been chosen and picked by Anurag (Kashyap). He is doing it (the television serial),” Bachchan tells us.

Bachchan will also be starting work with another Bengali director, Shoojit Sircar, soon. In Sircar’s film, he will even play a Bengali character. “I’m playing a retired Bengali IAS officer and Piku is his daughter. Deepika (Padukone) is playing that… We will be starting the shoot in June or July,” says Bachchan.

Bachchan says he is also keen to work with director Sujoy Ghosh. “Hopefully, later on, I will be doing a film with Sujoy. He has narrated a couple of stories. He has gotten busy with some other projects… But when we last met, this is what we talked of,” he says.
Bachchan earlier sung in Bengali for Ghosh’s 2012 thriller, Kahaani, that starred Vidya Balan.
