Akshay-Kumar

A lot has been written about Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan’s alleged comeback venture, Happy Anniversary, which will be directed by adman Prahlad Kakkar. Then, earlier this week, her actor-husband, Abhishek Bachchan refuted the news. But Aishwarya’s spokesperson maintains that “Prahlad’s script is also one of the many that she has given her nod to.”

Kakkar was the one who gave the actor her first big break in the ’90s, when he directed her in a cola ad. Incidentally, Aishwarya isn’t the only actor who will soon work with the director who proved to be a game changer for her. In what seems to have become a trend, Akshay Kumar, Deepika Padukone, Salman Khan, Naseeruddin Shah and Sunny Deol are all set to work with directors who catapulted their careers to the next level. Here’s taking a look at the tag teams and the upcoming projects they will soon reunite on.

Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan
Game changing director: Prahlad Kakkar
Game changing project: A cola commercial. The ad that also starred Mahima Choudhary and Aamir Khan hit the tube in 1993, and in 1994, she was crowned Miss World. Her fleeting presence in the ad, as Aamir’s hot next-door-neighbour Sanjana created a stir back then. She made a hit Bollywood debut with Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya in 1997.
Next film: Happy Anniversary

Akshay Kumar
Game changing director: Vipul Shah
Game changing project: Namastey London (NM; 2007). Akshay acted in many duds — Jaan-E-Mann and Mere Jeevan Saathi (both 2006) before this. After NM, he delivered five consecutive hits.
Next film: Namastey London 2

Deepika Padukone
Game changing director: Farah Khan
Game changing project: Om Shanti Om (OSO; 2007). Deepika made a hit debut with OSO, after which there has been no looking back. Her last three films have been `100 crore grossers.
Next film: Happy New Year

Salman Khan
Game changing director: Sooraj Barjatya
Game changing project: Maine Pyar Kiya (MPK; 1989). After MPK, he went on to star in hits like Hum Aapke Hai Koun (1994) and Hum Saath Saath Hain (1999).
Next film: Bade Bhaiyya (tentative title)

Sunny Deol
Game changing director: Anil Sharma
Game changing project: Gadar (2001). Before this hit, Sunny delivered duds like Arjun Pandit and Dillagi (both 1999). The director and actor also worked together on The Hero (2003) and Apne (2007).
Next film: Singh Saab The Great

Naseeruddin Shah
Game changing director: Kundan Shah
Game changing project: Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (JBDY; 1983) came at a time when Naseer was known for serious roles. JBDY was a flop, but it earned him roles in commercially successful films later.
Next film: Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro 2
