Bollywood balance: heroines even it out
Bollywood actresses aren’t just looking to work with the big stars; they are also signing films opposite younger actors like never beforebollywood Updated: Sep 11, 2013 15:35 IST
In hero-centric Bollywood, a leading lady’s career graph is often determined by how many films she has done with the handful of senior superstars — Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn.
The top female actors, as always, are acting with the big guys, but in a new phenomenon of sorts, they are doing a bit of a balancing act by simultaneously doing films with younger actors as well. So, while Katrina Kaif is rumoured to be working with Sushant Singh Rajput, Sonakshi Sinha will be seen with Arjun Kapoor. We take a closer look.
With the big stars: Aamir Khan (Dhoom:3); Hrithik Roshan (Bang Bang)
With the young ones: Sushant Singh Rajput (Fitoor)
Until now, Katrina has worked mostly with the big stars, including Akshay, Salman and Shah Rukh. That will change when she works with new-kid-on-the-block Sushant Singh Rajput in Abhishek Kapoor’s upcoming film, which is an adaptation of Charles Dickens’s novel, Great Expectations. She is balancing things out with films with senior star
Aamir in Dhoom:3 and Hrithik in Siddharth Anand’s Bang Bang.
With the big stars: Hrithik Roshan (Krrish 3),
With the young ones: Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor (Gunday)
Priyanka has worked with all the big names (Aamir being the only exception). But, interestingly, among all the current crop of female stars, she seems to be working with the most number of younger actors. So, you see her working with Arjun and Ranveer in the coming days. She is also going solo as the actor plays boxer Mary Kom in an upcoming biopic.
With the big ones: Akshay Kumar (Thuppakki remake),
Saif Ali Khan (Bullett Raja)
With the young ones: Shahid Kapoor (Rambo Rajkumar),
Arjun Kapoor (Okkadu remake)
She made her debut with Salman in Dabangg (2010). Later, Sonakshi went on to work in other blockbusters with stars such as Akshay (Rowdy Rathore; 2012) and Ajay (Son of Sardaar; 2012). Now, even as she continues to work with big stars, she has also been working with the young actors. She did Lootera with Ranveer, and will now be seen with Arjun in Boney Kapoor’s remake of Okkadu.
With the big stars: Shah Rukh Khan (Happy New Year), Ranbir Kapoor (Imtiaz Ali’s untitled next)
With the young ones: Arjun Kapoor (Finding Fanny Fernandes), Ranveer Singh (Ram Leela)
She started off her Bollywood career with Shah Rukh in Farah Khan’s Om Shanti Om (2007) followed by other star-studded ventures, such as Chandni Chowk To China (with Akshay in 2009), Love Aaj Kal (with Saif Ali Khan in 2009) and Housefull (again, with Akshay in 2010). Later, she worked with director-actor Farhan Akhtar (Karthik Calling Karthik; 2010), Imran Khan (Break Ke Baad; 2010) and Neil Nitin Mukesh (Lafangey Parindey; 2010). Now, Deepika will be seen working with Arjun in director Homi Adajania’s Finding Fanny Fernandes. She will also be seen opposite Ranveer Singh in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Ram Leela.
