Releasing films during certain festive seasons is one aspect of filmmaking that actors are very superstitious about. And the top actors each seem to have found themselves a slot. While Diwali almost always has worked for Shah Rukh Khan, for the past five years Eid has been the best period for Salman Khan. Does the festival season really brighten up ticket windows? Read on to find out.
Shah Rukh Khan: The Diwali king
Major films: Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Don (2006), Om Shanti Om (2007) and Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012)
The background check: The Diwali period has always proved to be lucky for SRK. Starting with thrillers like Baazigar (1993) and romantic films such as Dil To Pagal Hai (1997) and Veer-Zaara (2004) to action flicks Don and RA.One (2011), the festival has always got his films stupendous results. However, SRK’s Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008) and Don 2 (2011) released during Christmas, and yet went on to become hits.
Figures talk (Diwali releases)
Om Shanti Om: Rs 111 crore,
RA.One: Rs 115 crore,
Jab Tak Hai Jaan: Rs 102 crore
Diwali blast (total): Rs 328 crore
Salman Khan: The Eid winner
Major films: Wanted (2009), Dabangg (2010), Ready (2011), Bodyguard (2011), Ek Tha Tiger (2012)
The background check: Most of Salman’s hit films have released during Eid, which is why he considers the period auspicious. Interestingly, Dabangg 2 (2012) released during Christmas but didn’t fare as well. He has had a few Diwali releases in the past, like Main Aur Mrs Khanna (2009) and Saawariya (2007), which didn’t do too well either. This year, he is likely to miss his Eid date as his next, Mental, is only set to release in October or November.
Figures talk (eid releases)
Wanted: Rs 82 crore,
Dabangg: Rs 141 crore,
Ready: Rs 121 crore
Bodyguard: Rs 141 crore;

Aamir Khan: The Christmas charmer
Major films: Taare Zameen Par (2007), Ghajini (2005), 3 Idiots (2009)
The background check: Since Aamir’s directorial venture, Taare Zameen Par, released during Christmas in 2007, most of his films have inadvertently hit the theatres around December. The success of Rajkumar Hirani’s 3 Idiots cemented the fact that his films actually do work towards the end of the year. In 2012, however, Aamir ignored this custom and let Salman release Dabangg 2 around Xmas. The latest news is that Aamir is working hard to make sure that his upcoming action thriller, Dhoom:3, releases during his lucky period this year.
Figures talk (christmas releases)
Taare Zameen Par: Rs 78 crore,
Ghajini: Rs 155 crore,
3 Idiots: Rs 270 crore
Christmas Miracle (Total): Rs 503 crore
Akshay Kumar: The all-rounder
Major films: Heyy Babyy (2007), Singh Is Kinng (2008), Rowdy Rathore (2012), Special 26
The background check: Akshay has never been a big believer in the auspicious period funda. In fact, some of his films like Action Replayy (2010) and Blue (2009), which did release during Diwali, failed to create a stir. Since 2007, many of his films including Namastey London (2007), Housefull (2010) and OMG – Oh My God (2012) have hit the bull’s eye despite not having released in a particular festive period. His next, Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai 2, will release around Eid.

Heyy Babyy: Rs 67 crore,
