It comes as a surprise that Americans could be interested in Hindi music. Though this could be just the beginning and if things go as planned, Bollywood tunes may gain popularity even among whites in the US.
The website, torrins.com, which teaches Americans to play guitar on English songs, has started lesson in Bollywood music since last year. Says co-founder, Sunil Sundaram, “Of late, there has been curiosity among the western musicians and aspirants to learn Bollywood music and Indian music. We have got extremely good response for songs like Jai Ho.”
He adds: “Majority of our subscribers come from the US for English and Bollywood content. We have seen a good jump from India, Pakistan and UK too in the last few months.” Torrins currently has 40 Bollywood songs in its catalogue. The latest edition being, Mujhko Pehchan Lo from Don 2. “We are striving to add two Bollywood songs every week. Don 2 music is growing fast since we uploaded it two-weeks back,” says Sunil.
In fact, torrins.com has also invited Ehsaan Noorani, of Shankar Ehsaan Loy (music composers of Mujhko Pehchan Lo) for a meeting in the US. Says Ehsaan, speaking from LA, “I am currently at the NAMM show (National Association of Music Merchants). The torrins guys have invited me and are excited to meet even one third of SEL. I feel humbled at their enthusiasm to meet me.” He adds, “What's unique about torrins.com is that when they teach a song, the entire lesson is uploaded, which explores the guitar oriented intricacies; including all the licks, chords and rhythm coupled with detailed analysis and suggestive pointers on improvisation on such a funky tune.”
