Once an integral part of Bollywood, both on and off the big screen, Holi celebrations are fast becoming a thing of the past. While back in the day, lavish parties used to bring the entire film industry together for some fun and frivolity, for B-Town stars, work commitments, health issues and growing concern for the environment are now slowing gaining precedence over playing with colours.
This year, sources reveal that actors like Shah Rukh Khan, Sidharth Malhotra, Anushka Sharma and Parineeti Chopra will be working on Holi, and hence won’t be part of any celebrations. Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor, too, will give the festivities a miss. The former admits to being a cleanliness freak, while the latter is allergic to colours.
Javed Akhtar and Shabana Azmi, who are among the few to organise Holi celebrations annually on a large scale, won’t be hosting one this year, as they are on their way to the US tonight (March 22).
Some other stars are yet to make plans. Salman Khan, for example, is undecided on what he will do on the day. On the other hand, the Bachchans (Amitabh, Jaya, Abhishek and Aishwarya) are likely to celebrate the festival of colours at home.
But a few will enjoy the festivities. Bhumi Pednekar will celebrate a dry Holi with her family and friends, as she wants to conserve water, while Ayushmann Khurrana has taken off to Khandala for the festival.
Back in the day... how Bollywood celebrated Holi
Earlier, Holi was celebrated on a lavish scale in Bollywood. Here are some of the biggest bashes that used to take place annually:
* Raj Kapoor used to open the doors of RK Studios in Chembur to all industry members. Everyone used to gorge on the delicacies on offer and dance all day
* Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan used to host grand bashes at Prateeksha, their bungalow in Juhu. Big B would personally invite people to be part of these celebrations
* Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan used to host their friends till some time ago.
