Bollywood preview: The annual adult comedy flick
Hours before the film releases and a day before the reviews appear, here’s what you can expect from this week’s release(s)…bollywood Updated: Sep 13, 2013 17:11 IST
Film: Grand Masti
Cast: Vivek Oberoi (last seen in Jayantabhai Ki Luv Story), Riteish Deshmukh (last seen in Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum; 2012), Aftab Shivdasani (last seen in 1920 - Evil Returns; 2012), Bruna Abdullah (last seen in Desi Boyz; 2011), Karishma Tanna (last seen in Dosti; 2005), Manjari Phadnis (last seen in I M 24; 2012), Sonalee Kulkarni and Kainaat Arora (film debut for both).
Storyline: This sequel to the 2004 hit, Masti, sees the three protagonists (now married) come together again for their college reunion.
Indra Kumar (Last directed Double Dhamaal; 2011)
Starring Sanjay Dutt, Mallika Sherawat and Riteish Deshmukh, among others, it was a mild success at the box-office. It did not receive any positive word-of-mouth publicity. The director also made the 2004 original, Masti.
Anand Raj Anand and Sanjeev Darshan
Anand Raj Anand also composed the music for Masti. The first film’s album produced super hits like ‘Dil de diya hai’ and ‘Chori chori chhora chhori’. This soundtrack, however, hasn’t made heads turn.
Surprisingly, this film didn’t invite any major controversies. The content earned the movie an ‘adult’ certificate many months before it was ready for release, removing any scope of argument with the Censor Board.
The humungous cast has been going around town, promoting their movie at college festivals and on TV shows. They even organised a lavish music launch, but unfortunately, there seems to be no buzz around the release.
For those who enjoy a brand of crass adult content (and films like Kyaa Super Kool Hai Hum etc), this will probably be satisfying and more. A publishing house has also released a book called Grand Masti: The Fun Never Ends, which has been inspired by the film. And that, right there, is probably the only inspiration this film will be providing to anyone.
For the final verdict: Look out for Anupama Chopra’s review tomorrow
