Bollywood star-kids' style mantra
Bollywood star kids are taking a leaf out of their famous parents' look books. When it comes to fashion, we find that these young guns are definitely not kidding. Kavita Awaasthi finds out what makes them so fashionable.bollywood Updated: Sep 22, 2013 12:29 IST
Their parents are always under the scanner for their sartorial choices. Mom never steps out without designer threads and make-up intact, while dad is always sporting the latest trends and has every hair in place. But have Bollywood’s tiny tots inherited the fashion gene from their star parents?
In the west, seven-year-old Suri Cruise, daughter of Hollywood stars Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, who reportedly has a penchant for Hello Kitty and is supposedly designing her own fashion line, has fashion blogs following her every move. Pop star Madonna’s teenage daughter Lourdes is similarly hounded by paparazzi who want a shot of her outfits.
Moving the lens closer home, we get fashion designers Nishka Lulla, Ana Singh and Rocky S to take a look at a few star kids, who not only stand out in a crowd but at times even overshadow their famous parents. From Aamir Khan’s kids Junaid and Ira, Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan and daughter Suhana, Saif Ali Khan’s children Sara and Ibrahim, Akshay Kumar’s son Aarav, Karisma’s daughter Samaira, Madhuri Dixit’s sons Arin and Ryan, Ajay and Kajol Devgn’s daughter Nysa, Farah Khan’s triplets Czar, Anya and Diva to Abhishek and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s daughter Aaradhya, we look at these kids’ fashion statements.
Unlike their western counterparts Suri and Lourdes, the kids of Bollywood’s superstars don’t aim to make trend statements. They’d rather stick to a normal style of living. Largely, they don’t turn up in designer ensembles, pricey clothes or high heels. Aamir Khan’s son, Junaid, balances casual and formal wear and Saif Ali Khan’s son, Ibrahim, is known for pulling off a stylish look even in casuals. While Madhuri Dixit’s sons, Arin and Ryan, are mostly dressed up in casuals, Akshay Kumar’s son, Aarav, recently sparked a fashion fad, when he was spotted in mismatched shoes — black on one foot and blue on the other.
“Nowadays kids are more brand and fashion conscious,” feels Rocky S, fashion designer, who adds, “here we were talking about young kids like Aaradhya, Nysa and Samaira, who are dressed by their super moms who are themselves fashionstas and well-versed with what suits their kids the most. Whereas kids like Aryan, Suhana, Sara, Aarav and Jhanvi have their own sense of fashion.”
Designer Ana Singh doesn’t feel that celebrity kids need to live up to any standards set by their parents. “They wear what they like. Most of the younger kids aren’t very brand conscious, but they do end up wearing a lot of labels due to their parents. It depends on how the parents put it to them. Some parents want their kids to be seen only in branded clothes and accessories. Many others only want them to wear what’s comfortable and looks nice on them.”
Designer Nishka Lulla says that parents play a vital role in what their kids wear. “Parents shop and choose clothes for their kids. So, obviously, their choice is what the kids wear,” says Nishka, who also believes that, “one shouldn’t give a lot of importance to their kids’ style as they are not in the spotlight. Fashion comes from their parents.”
Most of the kids aren’t setting any style or fashion trend as such, claims Ana. She says, “I haven’t noticed them having a fashion statement or being very stylish as such. These kids wear what they like. They have specific likes and dislikes but don’t really make a style statement. Most of the time it’s the parents who dress them up till they become aware of what they want. These days kids become aware and make choices sooner than later in life. Sporty and fashionable stuff is what they go for.”
Nishka also feels that the dressing style of kids is also influenced by cartoons and movies. “Boys mostly prefer comfort over fashion. So, they might end up wearing clothes that have cartoon characters on them. Girls take interest in dressing and they might be influenced by Barbie or Miley Cyrus, who are youth icons from the west,” says Nishka.
She adds, “Bollywood kids are like normal kids. Their parents give them their style. They are more into studies and friends. I strongly think they don’t need to make a fashion statement at all. They can grow up first and have all their lives to develop a personality and be fashionable.”
Others under the lens Ana finds Nysa quite well turned out. “My favourite kid is Nysa, who I think is very stylish. She loves pink, is very trendy and has a good taste in clothes and picks up fun things for herself,” she says. Rocky adds, “Nysa looks like a simple girl next door. She dresses in simple attires and looks beautiful.”
Among other star kids, Shah Rukh Khan’s daughter, Suhana, is usually particular about her dressing sense, while Aamir’s kids, Ira and Junaid, are mostly spotted in casual attires. Suhana seems to be inspired by her mother Gauri’s dressing style. Nishka agrees, saying, “Suhana dresses up like Gauri and that can be seen in various photos.” Rocky feels, “Shah Rukh’s kids, Suhana and Aryan, dress up in a simple way. Their simplicity becomes their style
Rocky also finds Akshay Kumar’s son, Aarav, fashion conscious. “Like Father, like son,” he says, adding, “Aarav adopts his dad’s fashion style and has charming looks. While he feels, “Karisma Kapoor’s daughter, Samaira, is a baby doll, she is as gorgeous as her mom. Her dressing is inspired by Karisma.”
Nishka finds “Farah Khan’s kids always have something funny written on their clothes. Farah comes up with many gems for their t-shirts.”
With their dazzling fashion sense, these celebrity kids make an indelible impression. With time honing their taste, it can only get better.
MOST STYLISH BOY
Shah Rukh Khan's teenaged son Aryan seems to be a copy of his dad. Studying in London, this teenager is often seen at airports and events accompanying his family. He was recently shot looking dapper in a black pathani during Eid. Usually seen in casual clothes, Aryan is your typical teenager when it comes to dressing up or down, depending on the occasion. Nishka feels, “Aryan is a mini Shah Rukh Khan. His dressing style comes from his dad, which is the case with most star kids. He is the right balance of casual and formal. He dresses as per his age, which is a good thing.”
MOST STYLISH GIRL
Sridevi’s elder daughter Jhanvi's sense of style is already much talked about. On the precipice of following her famous superstar mother into Bollywood, this fame bodes well for the young fashionista. Nishka and Rocky both unanimously agree that Jhanvi stands out in the crowd of youngsters as she has an eye for fashion and her mother’s beautiful genes. Nishka says, “She mostly wears what’s trendy. She wears cool shoes that always match her outfits.” The Kapoor girl is always spotted with her family and by her mom’s side dressed in her finest. Off-shoulder outfits and snug dresses are Jhanvi’s favourites. She is usually seen sporting short skirts, dresses and even gowns at public events. Rocky adds, “I won’t say Jhanvi consistently follows trends, but she is fashion conscious and well versed with the traits of
fashion. She has a very classy look at each public appearance. Like mother, like daughter. Jhanvi truly follows fashion just like her mom.”
MOST STYLISH BABY
While all babies are beautiful, Nishka feels that “Aaradhya Bachchan is a very cute baby and is very sweetly dressed, always in a girly fashion. Her matching outfits and accessories make for an adorable look. Her bow-and-frock looks are lovely.” Aaradhya has been spotted in pink dresses with pink shoes, socks, hair clips and hairbands.
She seems to have all the possible shades of pink in her closet. Rocky, who finds it tough to make a choice, says, “It’s a very difficult choice but if I had to choose, I feel Aaradhya Bachchan is the one.” He finds Abhishek and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s daughter super cute. “Baby B is the cutest young bee in town and apparently mom loves to style baby bee,” he says.
