Bollywood stars go on a rejection spree

Bollywood stars don’t seem to like what’s being served to them lately. While actor Kareena Kapoor Khan left filmmaker Raj Kumar Gupta’s film Section 84, actor Fawad khan rejected Battle For Bittora and Sohail Khan’s upcoming film. Actor Alia Bhatt, too, has opted out of Homi Adajania’s Raabta.

Big stars walking out often affects the film in many ways, says trade analyst Omar Qureshi. “Many studios don’t even feel the need to read the script after they hear that an A-list actor is in it. So, the actor walking out changes many things. Filmmakers often have to tweak the script,” he says.

The most commonly cited reason for bowing out is the script — Fawad and Kareena being two cases in point. Gupta, however, feels that this is an excuse to make up for fee issues or creative differences. “That is the most convenient route ... it’s as old as cinema,” he laughs. For others such as Alia, it’s date issues. “If the actor walks out before the shooting starts, it doesn’t affect the film much barring additions or subtractions in budget,” says trade analyst Atul Mohan.
