It has always been star kids, who hogged the limelight in both politics and Bollywood, but of late, looks like, it's the celebrity nephews and nieces, who're making headlines. Last week, V Singla, Union railway minister Pawan Bansal's nephew made news after being arrested in an alleged bribery case, followed by West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee's nephew Abhishek, who came into the limelight for allegedly running an illegal micro finance company.
However, while nephews in politics have made news for all the wrong reasons, as far as Bollywood is concerned, the bhaanja-bhateeja brigade only sounds promising. In the coming months, at least half a dozen nephews and nieces of celebs, including Madhuri Dixit, Lalit Modi and Rishi Kapoor will make their Bollywood debut. In the past too, Imran Khan (Aamir Khan's nephew), Emraan Hashmi (Mahesh Bhatt's nephew), Abhay Deol (Dharmendra's nephew) have made their uncles proud. Back in the 90s too, Hema Malini's niece Madhoo stunned the nation with her heartwarming performance in the Mani Ratnam hit, Roja.
Nephews and nieces of the famous have even carved a niche on TV. Actor Govinda's nephew and comedian Krushna Abhishek, and niece, actor-compere Ragini Khanna are popular faces on the tube. Ayub Khan, veteran actor Dilip Kumar's nephew, who made heads turn with his debut flick Mashooq (1992), is now a known face on tele soaps.
