Chatur of 3 Idiots (2009), Omi Vaidya is on a high these days about playing one of the leads in his second film, Madhur Bhandarkar’s Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji. Vaidya will be seen as a matrimonial services provider. “Unlike 3 Idiots, here, I romance a girl (played by Shraddha Das) in the film,” he says.
Vaidya says he was careful not to do roles similar to Chatur’s after 3 Idiots, though a lot of offers came his way. So he continued to shuttle between work in America and Bollywood. “But now I don’t have time to be in LA or audition there because I am here shooting most of the time,” says Vaidya, who waited for better roles to come his way, until Bhandarkar called him.
“I had seen Chandni Bar (2001), and have been a great fan of his work ever since. So I didn’t think twice before saying yes,” says Vaidya. In the film, Vaidya plays an idealist, and is shown to have stringent views on sex before marriage.
When asked about his personal views, he says, “It’s different for each person. But if someone’s in love, then yes.”
Of mixed Goan and Maharashtrian descent, Vaidya is also excited to play a Marathi mulga (man) on screen in this film. He says, “I speak Marathi at home, but this character was very different, so it was interesting.”
A trained director and editor, Vaidya says his skills come handy while acting. “I know what the director is trying to do so I can adapt to give him what he wants from the scene,” says Vaidya. So will he direct in the near future? “It’s one of my long-term plans to tell good stories. As of now, I am concentrating on acting,” he says.
