CRITICS' VERDICT: Gangs of Wasseypur 2 more gripping than Part 1

Director, Anurag Kashyap's culmination to this gang-saga is as bloody as the first (if not more); yet it's an easier watch. The storyline of GOW 2 surges forth much faster as the new generation of gangsters, gun for each other with greater viciousness, feel critics.

"The moment has arrived for the subsequent chapter of Gangs Of Wasseypur to unfurl and as Anurag Kashyap would have it, this one is more gripping of the two. While the former fraction saw Manoj Bajpayee and Tigmanshu Dhulia's characters locking horns, the succeeding portion sees their sons cart frontward the resentment," writes Taran Adarsh, Bollywood Hungama.

"Along with vibrant characters, Anurag amalgamates humor skillfully in the sequence of events [note the amusing names: Definite, Perpendicular and Tangent]. It also illustrates how Wasseypur is consumed with Bollywood; they emulate hairdos and appearances of various Hindi movie heroes. While there is little doubt that Gangs Of Wasseypur was winning to the core, Gangs Of Wasseypur 2 infuses some remarkable light moments in the narrative that reeks of vengeance and reprisal," he adds.

"While the beginning and end and most of everything in between is gripping, Kashyap goes overboard in throwing in to many elements which unnecessary lengthen the film, taking away the 'impact' he would have so desired. For one, the scene where Sardar's youngest son is romancing a girl and also the scene in a theatre are unnecessary intrusions to the crisp narrative," writes Martin D'Souza, Glamsham.

"The storyline surges forth much faster as the new generation of gangsters, now armed with mobile phones and automatic rifles, gun for each other with greater viciousness and less ceremony than ever before," says Saibal Chatterjee, NDTV.com.

"The blood-letting is far more insistent in Gangs Of Wasseypur II. The narrative acquires a momentum that is often breathless and the warring men drop dead quicker than you can count," adds Chatterjee.

"For those who like their celluloid hard and bloody and full of machismo, with an overdose of bodies, butchering and bloody-bravado, welcome to blood-fest - Round Two! This time it's double the dollops of gore; two much. Booming guns and metal-shredded innards spilling gut onto the streets. More revenge and rage. More gangs and more bangs (some pistols firing from lungi covered groins) and more man-power. With every shade of red, black and grey - deeper and bolder," writes Madhureeta Mukherjee, TOI.

Direction

"Director Anurag Kashyap, in his trademark pragmatic approach to story-telling, fascinatingly spins this tremendous account. However, with an elongated runtime, the movie misplaces grip, albeit faintly, towards the middle of the subsequent half. But congregates steam yet again without much ado, ensuing a spectacular culmination," writes Adarsh.

"Director, Anurag Kashyap's culmination to this gang-saga is as bloody as the first (if not more); yet it's an easier watch. The story is astutely interspersed with bursts of music (Bihari folkish tunes with a modern twist), humour (crass and rural), high drama and sudden relief - like a sexual climaxing. Even with a high quotient of brutal violence and moral assassination, Kashyap keeps his sense of humour (mostly black) intact, and entertains. With characters named 'Perpendicular', 'Definite' (Zeishan Quadri), 'Tangent' - he truly defies all tiresomely tried-and-tested formulas of filmmaking in Bollywood with his 'big bang-bang theory'. Though in spurts, it unleashes scenes that make you crack up, in true Bollywood style humour. Wasseypur is not devoid of star-struck fans, with gangsters and locals walking and talking like a deadly Dutt or a super cool Salman, peppered with dialogues like ' Hindustan mein jab tak cinema hai, log ch***ya bante rahenge'," writes Mukherjee.

But Devi differs. "No doubt that it must have been a very difficult decision for director Anurag Kashyap to decide which characters to retain for the sequel. But GOW2 just doesn't live up to expectations. It seems long, tedious and repetitive," says the movie critic.

Script
"After the mayhem in GOW, the script of GOW2 has many of the faults of its predecessor; sometimes even more. Characters like Perpendicular, Mohsina seem like they could have given much more had they been developed better, while others like Farhan (Piyush Mishra) have been relegated to the background. This doesn't really make sense in the movie and seems haphazard," writes Roshni Devi, Koimoi.com.

Performances
"One of the reasons why GOW2 is worth watching is because all the performances are top notch! Nawazuddin Siddiqui does the perfect shift of character as Faizal Khan. To paraphrase his character, "Sab ka badla liya Faizal!" Huma is lovely as Mohsina. It's a pleasure to watch the shifting moods of Perpendicular and Zeishan Quadri as Definite. Everyone else provides incredible support on screen," says Devi.

"Nawazuddin Siddiqui spells doom, is devious and highly-dramatic - yet you take to his character almost instantly. He brilliantly blazes through this role, from being as strong or as shallow as his character demands. Huma Qureshi, with her gaudy clothes, designer sun-glasses and unusual attractiveness is the hottest cheez in Wasseypur. She beautifully lends support as a powerful man's 'prouder' better-half, even in his worst crimes. Richa Chaddha holds fort in the sequel too, strong and poised, she's fab. Zeishan Quadri makes a mark, most 'Definite'ly," says Mukherjee.

Conclusion

"On the whole, Gangs Of Wasseypur 2 is an Anurag Kashyap show all through and without an iota of doubt, can easily be listed as one amongst his paramount works. An engaging movie with several bravura moments. Watch it for its absolute cinematic brilliancy!" concludes Adarsh.

"The revenge, filmed with an operatic slo-mo rhythm, is bloodier than anything you would have seen before. But if you liked Gangs Of Wasseypur, there is no reason why won't have another blast watching GOW II. But be warned: be sure that your stomach for blood and gore doesn't give way," says Chatterjee.

"The violence hits you like a volcano, the gaalis get upgraded with every scene, and blood flows more easily than water in Mumbai's municipal taps. And if all this leaves you giddy, GOW II is not your scene," concludes Mukherjee.
