We may call her the Tara of Tamasha, or the Mastani of Bajirao Mastani, but perhaps actor Deepika Padukone may never have been known as just a ‘female companion’. When Deepika stepped out for a dinner date with tennis World No. 1 Novak Djokovic in LA she was referred to as Djokovic’s ‘female companion’ by a foreign tabloid. It then went on to describe the Bollywood star as “the leggy brunette”.
The two were spotted at a popular celebrity hangout, The Nice Guy. Deepika is currently shooting for her Hollywood film XXX: The Return of Xander Cage with Hollywood actor Vin Diesel and others. Needless to say, a Twitter outrage followed with the tabloid being at the receiving end.
They were clicked by the paparazzi while exiting the restaurant and were also seen getting into the same car. A Daily Mail report said, “The world number one tennis player appeared to have had a great night as he was pictured exiting the bar - popular among LA’s A-lister set - in the dark hours of the evening with a female companion. While he kept it casual, she appeared to have made more of an effort in sartorial terms, favouring a timeless monochrome colour theme. The leggy brunette slipped her towering figure into a flirty frock which was decorated with a statement floral print and skimmed her knees.”
However, the two go back a long way. Deepika has made appearances at Wimbledon in the past. Even when tennis giants Nadal, Federer and Djokovic were in Delhi for a tournament, Deepika was the special guest in December, 2015. She also reportedly hosted Djokovic and his wife Jelena for a dinner when they were in India during the same time.
Her fans, however, refused to play by tennis’ ‘love all’ dictum. They took to Twitter to share their chagrin about the foreign tabloid failing to identify their beloved star.
