At the premiere of her latest film, Cocktail, in a South Delhi theatre, Deepika Padukone had surprise guests in the audience. Her whole family, including her father, former badminton champion Prakash Padukone, mother Ujjala and younger sister Anisha, had flown in to encourage Deepika. In the last five years (since Deepika’s debut with Om Shanti Om in 2007), the entire family has never attended a priemere of one of her films together. A source present at the event says, “She was very happy and emotional at seeing her whole family there.”
Directed by Homi Adajania and produced by Saif Ali Khan’s banner, Illuminati Films, the film also marks the debut of model-turned-actor Diana Penty. In the movie, Deepika plays Veronica, a modern girl based in London.
Deepika, it seems, was especially keen to get her parents’ reactions on her role. “For Deepika, this film has been a huge challenge as she is playing a character that’s not very conventional. She wanted her parents to give her the first reaction,” says Deepika’s spokesperson.
Apparently, Deepika was given a choice between the two roles — that of the simple Meera and the hip Veronica. “She played a character similar to Meera in Love Aaj Kal (2009), that’s why she chose to play Veronica as a challenge,” the source adds.
