Bollywood movies have often brought certain areas of the city in the limelight, and got people talking.

For instance, the song Kajra Re, from the movie Bunty Aur Babli made Dariba Kalan and Ballimaran, located in Old Delhi, popular. The film Vicky Donor, released recently, has now made Lajpat Nagar famous too.

We look at some of the films that made localities in Delhi a favourite with visitors and residents alike.

Delhi-6
Chandni Chowk
A must visit for every tourist in the city is Chandni Chowk, in Old Delhi. The area is home to legendary shops and eateries. Paranthe Wali Gali, Dariba Kalan and Camera market are some of the famous markets in the area. Popular for trousseau shopping — there are a myriad of shops selling lehengas, saris and other bridal wear at wholesale prices. The oldest sweet shop in Delhi, Ghantewala, established in the year 1790, is also located here.

Lajpat Nagar

Lajpat Nagar is located in South Delhi. Central Market in Lajpat Nagar is a popular shopping destination, with it’s interesting mix of flea-markets and glitzy, big-brand showrooms. College students and women frequently visit to explore clothing options including affordable kurtas, dress material, cheap and imported lingerie, silver, as well as fake jewellery. Mehendi artists here are much sought after by people in and around the city.

Dev D
Paharganj

The chaotic main bazaar of Paharganj is popular with backpackers, tourists and college students. Paharganj is known for budget hotels (some of which provide rooms for as low as R500 a day) and cafés serving world cuisine. Also, if you are on a hippie or retro inspired fashion outing, don’t miss out on buying dresses and accessories from shops in the area.

Band Baaja Baaraat
Janakpuri

Located in West Delhi, Janakpuri boasts of being home to people who are carefree, and love to indulge and have fun when it comes to shopping or eating out. A popular landmark of the area is District Center near Janakpuri West Metro station. The center has a multiplex cinema hall, restaurants and branded showrooms. The film also brought Ramjas college in the limelight.

Rockstar
North Campus, DU
The movie made North Campus at Delhi University famous by showing the characteristics of a typical DU student. The campus is home to prestigious colleges in the country. The much sought after rajma-chawal and samosas of Hindu college were also shown in the movie. The ridge area at North Campus is also a favourite hangout for students.
