Remember VJ Lola Kutty? Of late, the award-winning TV host has been attracting attention for a completely different reason. Apparently, debutante London Paris New York (LPNY) director Anu Menon has been experiencing a case of mistaken identity, as the media and others constantly confuse her for being the TV personality, whose real name is Anuradha Menon.
“At our film’s music launch recently, I was asked by the media how it felt to move careers from TV to directing movies. It’s weird that people don’t realise that we (Lola Kutty and her) don’t even look similar. It was little annoying at first, but now, I explain things patiently to everyone. I think that’s the best way to handle it,” says Anu with a smile, adding that her friends are also amused.
A student of London Film School, Anu has also directed some short movies that have been screened at major film festivals across the globe. “I am sure Lola Kutty too must be bearing the brunt (of this mistaken identity). After all, you don’t want people to make calls and ask if you have directed a film when you haven’t,” she laughs.
On TV, Lola Kutty appears as a bespectacled Malayali lady who speaks English with a heavy South Indian accent. Unlike other VJs, she wears saris and sports a gajra (garland) in her curly, oily hair.
“Some day, I will sit with Lola Kutty over coffee and have a laugh about it,” says Anu, whose film will release on March 2.
