Don’t want to be an item: Tannishtha Chatterjee

Tannishtha Chatterjee says she’s looking for challenging roles in commercial films and won’t settle for less.

Actor Tannishtha Chatterjee, who is known for her roles in off beat films such as British film Brick Lane (2007) and Road, Movie (2009), says that she does not mind being a part of a commercial project as long as she has a substantial role in it.

“I am open to a typical commercial potboiler, but I would not want to be just an item in a film. The role has to be challenging. I feel that now with films such as Piku coming along, the line between art house films and mainstream films is getting reduced,” she says.

Meanwhile, the actor will be seen sharing the screen with former Australian cricketer Brett Lee in her upcoming film, Unindian. Talking about her relationship with Lee, Tannishtha says that the two share a very warm equation and get along very well.

“It was such a lovely experience working with him. He is such a chilled out person. He is so natural and effortless when it comes to acting and has a wonderful sense of humour. We had an amazing time shooting in Sydney,” she says, adding that the two continue to catch up even though the film has ended. “We keep in touch regularly. He was here in India a few weeks back and we met at that time. He is a beautiful human being.”

Asked how easy it is to get a break in international cinema, the 34-year-old says, “Making a mark in international films is challenging. You are competing with people from all over the world. But I am very particular about the characters that I play. I only say yes to a project if I am convinced that I suit the role.”
