Earlier this week, South star Silk Smitha’s brother V Naga Vara Prasad issued a legal notice against The Dirty Picture director Milan Luthria and producer Ekta Kapoor for making the supposed biopic without any formal permission from the family. Balaji Motion Pictures, however, remains unfazed. They claim that their film is not based on anyone’s life.

“With reference to the legal notice received, Balaji wishes to clarify that The Dirty Picture is the romantic journey of a fiercely ambitious starlet, who dreams of making it big on the silver screen. It draws inspiration from the strugglers of the ’80s,” says a spokesperson from the production house, in a statement.

To steer clear of any confusion, the makers have even added a disclaimer in the beginning of the film declaring it as a complete work of fiction.

“The film is the story of a woman’s journey to reach the top,” says Tanuj Garg, CEO, Balaji Motion Pictures, adding, “Just because her (Vidya) name happens to be Silk, it doesn’t means it’s her story. There used to be countless girls in the 80’s. We have never stated in official terms that the film is a biography.”

Vara Prasad had has also asked Balaji to screen the film for him before its official release, but to no avail.

“We are not obliged to show the film to anybody,” adds Tanuj.

This is the second time Milan is facing legal complications with his films.

Around the release of Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai (2010), slain underworld don Haji Mastan’s family had raised objections to certain parts of the film.
