Bollywood actor Jiah Khan, 25, who was found hanging in her Juhu apartment on Monday night, was depressed over her rocky relationship with actor Aditya Pancholi's son Sooraj (22) and her faltering film career, police suspect.
Police recorded Sooraj’s statement for four hours on Tuesday. He was the last person to speak to the Jiah, whose real name was Nafisa Khan, just an hour before her mother found her hanging from the ceiling fan in her bedroom at around 11.23pm.
The actor, who debuted opposite Amitabh Bachchan in the 2007 film Nishabd, could also have been upset as she had failed to get a role in a Tamil film she auditioned for on Saturday, police said. The producers apparently told the actor, who grew up in London, that she was underweight.
No suicide note was found.
Sooraj reportedly told the police that they were in a happy relationship for a year after they met on a social networking website. Jiah, police quoted her mother Rabea Khan as saying, was depressed for the past two months, probably due to the relationship as she didn’t have any financial troubles.
She, however, did not make any allegations against Sooraj.
Jiah was prone to mood swings, said Rabea, who was out with Aditya Pancholi for dinner when her daughter ended her life.
A pack of Ayurvedic sleeping pills was recovered from her bedroom. Unconfirmed reports said the actor may have attempted suicide by slitting her wrists eight months ago.
Murder has been ruled out as the apartment had a biometric lock which could only be opened by Jiah or her mother.
"There are no signs of forced entry into the apartment and no valuables are missing. Her room, where she committed suicide, was also in order. Murder, prima facie, has been ruled out," police said.
Jiah's last rites will be performed on Wednesday as the family is waiting for her two sisters to return from London.
