Shah Rukh Khan’s Fan has become the highest weekend opener at the box office in 2016, earning Rs 52.35 crore. Akshay Kumar’s Airlift now ranks second with Rs 44.30 crore in first weekend collection.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted, “#Fan biz fails to show major growth on Sunday... Fri 19.20 cr, Sat 15.40 cr, Sun 17.75 cr. Total: ? 52.35 cr. India biz.”

Fan which features SRK in a double role, made an impressive opening collection on Friday netting Rs 19.20 crore. The earnings, however, dipped on Saturday at Rs 15.40 crore but bounced back on Sunday (Rs 17.75 crore). Made at an estimated budget of Rs 105 crore, Fan is likely to sail smooth given that there is no major Bollywood release in the next 15 days.

Directed by Maneesh Sharma, Fan is the story of an obsessive fan Gaurav Channa whose adoration transforms into hatred when his idol, the superstar Aryan Khanna, refuses to acknowledge him. SRK plays both Aryan and Gaurav in the film. Khan has been applauded for his portrayal of an obsessed fan.

The film, however, is nowhere close to the collections of Bajrangi Bhaijaan and PK. While the Salman Khan film made an opening weekend collection of Rs 102.6 crore in 2015, Aamir’s PK earned Rs 95.21 crore. It remains to be seen if Fan gets to enter the much-talked-about Rs 300-crore-club.
