Farah Khan’s upcoming film, Happy New Year (HNY), has some happy stories behind it. For instance, she and Shah Rukh Khan revived their friendship due to it. But not everyone looks likely to come away pleased. It seems that Sonakshi Sinha’s name, after being on top of the list for the leading lady’s spot, has now been unceremoniously struck off it. Ever since Shah Rukh and Farah announced they would collaborate on HNY, various names like Katrina Kaif, Deepika Padukone, Parineeti Chopra and even Kajol have cropped up for the female lead. But sources say that Sonakshi — who starred in Farah and Shirish Kunder’s home production, Joker — was the favourite to star opposite SRK.
However, the equation between Farah and Sonakshi soured after the latter’s conspicuous absence during the post-promotion of Joker. “Farah was always fond of her. But she is miffed with the fact that Sonakshi didn’t promote Joker the way she should have. As things stand now, she is no longer in the consideration list for HNY,” says an insider.
Sources close to Farah confirm that the filmmaker-choreographer is unhappy with Sonakshi’s “unprofessional behaviour” because, despite being the lead actor in Joker, she didn’t take time out to promote the film. It was only “Farah and Chitrangada (who only did an item song) who went all out to promote it,” adds the insider.
A few days ago, an unconfirmed report also suggested that SRK wanted Parineeti to star opposite him rather than Sonakshi. Now, the actors believed to be in the running are Parineeti, Deepika and Katrina. “Nothing is final right now. Since Shah Rukh has been busy with Jab Tak Hai Jaan, he hasn’t had the time to sit and discuss things with Farah. Once he gets some time off, everything, including the female lead, will be decided,” adds the insider.
Farah remained unavailable for a comment while Sonakshi came up with a terse “It’s not true” when asked about her exclusion. The film goes on the floors in December.
