As a way of preserving the legacy of his productions, as well as giving back to the world of cinema, Vidhu Vinod Chopra has been publishing the screenplays of some of his films.

After starting the books division of his banner in 2009, his productions like Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006) and 3 Idiots (2009) have had their screenplay published. Now, the film-maker is preparing to release a set of three books based on screenplays of the late Guru Dutt’s productions, as well as other aspects of his life and career.

A source close to Chopra reveals, "With this venture, he wants to bring passionate students of cinema and film lovers closer to the work of directors. Films made under the aegis of Dutt’s banner are an important part of Hindi cinema. The screenplays of three of his timeless classics — Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962), Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1960) and Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959) — will be made available."

The official book launch — to be held at a Mumbai hotel on February 23 — will be an interesting one too. "Four directors who have looked up to Dutt — Farhan Akhtar, Dibakar Banerjee, Anurag Kashyap, and Chopra himself — will come together for a panel discussion on Dutt’s films and the screenplays," explains the source, adding, "The books have been authored by Dinesh Raheja and Jitendra Kothari. Chopra has personally looked into the process for the last four years."

When contacted, Chopra confirmed the news, and said, "Guru Dutt’s films continue to inspire, amaze, delight and seduce us. I would like to pay my personal tribute to him."
