Director Vivek Agnihotri, who claims his latest movie, Hate Story is India’s first ‘erotic film’, released its first uncensored trailer on YouTube. Considering the genre of the film, Agnihotri says that the promos cannot run in theatres playing family entertainment movies. “The promo has adult content, which is why we decided to release it on YouTube,” he says.
The film, starring Nikhil Dwivedi, Gulshan Devaiah and Bengali actor Paoli Dam, is a revenge story splattered with raunchy elements. Agnihotri admits that he did not get permission to broadcast the uncensored promos on TV channels. “The Censor Board had objections against the promos we edited for TV, due to which we will run a disclaimer every time,” he says. The film shows frontal nudity and lovemaking scenes.
The director is also seeking an ‘A’ certificate for the theatrical release of the film. “It is not for people below a certain age.” He adds, “In the promo, bold scenes are shown out of context, but in the movie, it will be clear that they’re an integral part of story telling.”
Ask if he thinks the censor board will let them retain all the bold scenes in the film, he says, “We will have to find a way so that they approve of it. Just as a war movie can’t be made without action scenes, a film like mine cannot be made without eroticism.” Agnihotri also believes that his film will be an acid test of maturity for Indian society. He says, “Let’s see if society is mature enough to accept this kind of a film.”
