Vidya Balan has set a trend by promoting her films “in character.” During Ishqiya (2010), she made public appearances in garish, printed saris, long hair let loose and a nose-stud, a la Krishna. “Many were taken aback but I believed that if people saw me in the ‘look’, they would instantly associate me with the film and my character rather than Vidya Balan, the movie star,” she reasons.
The gamble paid off and after that Vidya turned up with No One Killed Jessica (2012) co-star Rani Mukherji looking de-glam in the glasses and clothes designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee had picked out for her in the film. That audacious move continued with The Dirty Picture.
This time, she borrowed from her retro wardrobe from the film set in the 1980s, turning up as Silk in flared bellbottoms, polka-dotted tops and over-sized glares that metamorphosed into sequined saris and daring 'cholis' (blouses) during O la la live acts on stage.
In her new film Kahaani, Vidya plays a seven-month pregnant woman who comes to Kolkata in search of her missing husband. And after lugging a one-and-a-half kg prosthetic stomach to get her filmi ‘waddle’ right, she’s been sporting maternity wear in real life too, doing interviews with a pillow strapped to her stomach.
“It makes me feel like a woman in an advanced stage of pregnancy,” she smiles. “Since I have been associated with the project since its conception, I actually feel like a mother about to deliver, nervous, excited and sleep-starved, hoping my new born will bring me the greatest joy.”
The fashion disaster from Heyy Baby (2007) has redefined fashion today, bringing saris back on the red carpet and giving maternity wear a more trendy look with ankle-length dresses and low-heeled boots. Point this out and she gives all the credit to her designer Sabyasachi: “Today, I'm comfortable in my own skin and happy to make a style statement with my characters.”
