Rajkumar Hirani is “happy and content” these days, but the buck doesn’t stop there. Ad filmmaker-turned-director Raju, as he is fondly called, is known for films like Munnabhai MBBS (2003), Lage Raho Munnabhai (2006) and 3 Idiots (2009). In between scripting for his next venture and helping his assistant Rajesh Mapuskar with the second draft of Ferarri Ki Sawari starring Sharman Joshi, Hirani is engaging in activities that keep him “creatively ticking”. He’s recently launched an ad film company called Canvass Films and after making two ad films — one with Amitabh Bachchan and another with Kareena Kapoor, Hirani now wants to make documentaries next.
“My unwinding also revolves around work. I may make a music video next or a series of documentaries on subjects that are close to my heart,” says Hirani. But he admits that it’s not possible to make a film on all those subjects. “So I will convert them into documentaries. If I am unable to do it now, then I will probably make them in my retirement days,” he says.
Apart from the joy of telling a story in 60 seconds, making ad films keeps his “staff happy” who otherwise have to wait until his next film starts. Besides directorial work in different mediums, Raju is keen to learn to play an instrument. “I would love to learn to play a key board. If I can learn to master that, I will be able to pick up other instruments as well. I play a little but am not good enough as yet,” he laughs.
Upbeat about 3 Idiots having swept numerous awards at several award shows, Hirani says, “Filmmaking is team work unlike a painter who can paint alone. A director doesn’t work alone; you work with a team. Everyone contributes. So the success is a collective effort of everyone involved.”
Talking about Ferarri Ki Sawari, Hirani says, “Rajesh has worked with me on three films and I am very fond of him. I am helping him in whatever way possible.”
