Hollywood makeup artist Mark Garbarino is upset and says a recent bitter experience has put him off Indian films for good. Gabarino had recently alleged that the makers of the biopic on boxer Mary Kom, being produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, did not pay him for doing a look test on lead actor Priyanka Chopra last month. The artist, is now, however, on the verge of reaching a settlement with the makers.
“Probably not,” is how he answers the query on whether he’ll take up a Bollywood assignment anymore. “I would like to hope that that this particular style is not indicative of all Bollywood producers. I expect any film company to be fair and honest in our discussions and agreements,” says the artist, who has worked on Hollywood hits such as Pirates Of Caribbean and Star Trek.
Garbarino says that he met Priyanka at a Beverly Hills hotel for a test look in April. “I did designs for test looks for Priyanka Chopra to lend a resemblance of Mary Kom, or just to make her look a bit ethnic like the women of India’s north east.” He adds that the makers did not respond to his calls for payment of $4,500 (Rs 2.4 lakh).
Bhansali’s spokesperson, who wished to remain anonymous, however, dismissed the allegation, saying, “It’s just not true. This person is just trying to gain mileage.”
