Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali has chosen Delhi designer Anju Modi to design costumes for his much talked-about film Ram Leela starring Ranveer Singh and Priyanka Chopra. Earlier, the filmmaker was in talks with Kolkata-based designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee, who made a foray into Bollywood with Bhansali’s film Black, in 2005.
However, now Modi has been finalised. This would be her first Bollywood film. “We’ve been in talks since March. Sanjay’s office called me and I was very impressed by their research. Sanjay and I first met in Mumbai and then we went to Ahmedabad to shop for the film. We went to small shops in narrow gullies to source the material.
We shopped for 8-10 hours and I observed that he has grand ideas,” she says, adding that she was picked because of her work that reflects the traditions of Rajasthan and Kutch.
About Bhansali’s decision to choose her over old favourite Sabyasachi, Modi says, “That would be a very egoistic way of looking at things. I just see this as a great opportunity.” While Bhansali has not yet made an announcement about Priyanka Chopra replacing Kareena Kapoor in the film, Modi reveals, “I am designing for Priyanka, Supriya Pathak and to some extent Ranveer Singh. I was supposed to design for Kareena, but now it’s Priyanka. Both are divas and I’m equally excited.”
Sabya to close couture week
Sabyasachi Mukherjee may have lost out to Anju Modi when it comes to Bhansali’s film, but the designer has another feather in his cap. He has been chosen to do the closing show at the upcoming PCJ Delhi Couture Week. About his show with the theme ‘new moon’ on August 12, Sabya says, “Customarily, there’s enormous pressure on designers to go over the top, but I’ll keep my show restrained”.
