It’s a role that will give actor Deepak Dobriyal,35, nightmares for years to come. In filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma’s film Not a Love Story, Dobriyal plays a character inspired by Emile Jerome Matthews, the former Naval officer recently convicted for the gory 2008 murder of media executive Neeraj Grover.

“We started shooting immediately after RGV offered me the role, so I didn’t get time to research the role. Though we finished shooting within 12 days, I couldn’t sleep for five nights because I kept thinking about some of the scenes we had shot,” says Dobriyal. Besides the murder, the movie also depicts the fact that Grover’s body was hacked by Matthews and his fiance Maria Susairaj and that they made love next to the body. “Everyone was shaken up by the way they chopped the body into 300 pieces and burnt it, we have also showed that in the film, but symbolically,” he adds.

Having lived in Matthews’ skin, can Dobriyal empathise with him? “No, nothing justifies murder. What he did was wrong. But, I think I can understand his frustration in that moment,” he says, adding, “At that moment he must not have been getting the answers that he wanted. His mental state was marred by incomplete dreams and answers. Agar usko who jawaab mil jaate, uski life kucch aur shape leti. That state took him to a level where he ended up committing the crime. When I took on the film, the case was not being talked about, now people say, ‘Kyun liya yeh role?’

Dobriyal, is now finding out more about the real life characters by meeting people around them. “I saw pictures and one that stayed with me was that of Maria and Jerome meeting in jail. They looked so cool..greeting each other. I also spoke to their friends and neighbours. It is strange how friends of all three- Jerome, Maria and Neeraj claim that their friend was the best.” However, he consciously avoided meeting Jerome. “I never wanted to meet him. That would have coloured my portrayal of the character.”

There has been buzz that Susairaj may promote the film with the cast: “I am sure that is a rumour. If Maria promotes the film, I will not. I am very sure of that,” he says.
