Highlight Story

Celebrity photographer Ketan Mehta has been shooting pictures for the last 10 years. He has dabbled with advertising campaigns to editorial work, and more recently film publicity stills. “Photography to me is capturing emotion in each frame.

I feel every person is a character, be it Eminem, Naomi Campbell, Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Vidya Balan, the neighbour’s child or a boy who delivers tea for that matter. While playing a role, actors react and express in a certain way. Capturing that character in a person is photography for me,” says Mehta.

RaniHe recalls how he had once spoken to friend and fellow photographer Jitu Savlani about his interest in shooting stills of films. Soon after, he found himself on the sets of Paan Singh Tomar. After that, there was no stopping him. The lensman has clicked stills for No One Killed Jessica (2011), The Dirty Picture (2011) and the yet-to-be-released film Gangs Of Wasseypur.

His advise to freshers: “Despite the advent of digital, its important that newbies learn the basic techniques. It’s most important that you keep learning.”

Humble and patient
This picture was taken at Bidar Fort in Karnataka. Vidya is very humble, patient and superbly professional. This picture was taken at a time when we were losing light, we had to frame and shoot quicker than you can imagine.

Fashion shot
The shot is from Meghna Khanna’s model portfolio. She put together the look herself. I like the look of a Bengali woman — the prominent sindoor, keys tied to the sari (not visible in photograph), bangles, and the blouse, which was specially stitched for the shoot. It’s always nice to work with someone who is enthusiastic.

Has great energy
He is one of the most good looking guys in our industry. The attitude he wears when facing a camera is amazing. RA.One released around this time and he had been busy travelling all over to promote the film. He hadn’t slept well in many nights, but the moment he stepped in front of the camera, he was full of energy. It may look like that he poses with a lot of ease, but taking into consideration the professional time he has put in as a model, I’m sure he’s worked really hard to get it right.

The Al Pacino of our industry
This picture was taken at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad for The Dirty Picture. The moment he dons his costume, Naseer saab becomes the character he is playing. He is the Al Pacino of our industry. During the shoot, there was a technical issue due to which he gave a couple of re-takes. Although none of those takes were similar, they were funny in their own way.

She is a perfectionist
We shot this image in Delhi. Rani, as an actor, is quite restless. She doesn’t stop till she delivers the perfect shot, whether for film or for a still camera. This picture was taken during the shoot of No One Killed Jessica. As soon as the filming was through, she happily posed for the camera. But the perfectionist that she is, she made me delete all the pictures and keep only this one. I didn’t agree with her then, but now I definitely know why she did that.
