There are few in Bollywood who are as candid about their ‘weak’ points as
is. Simply because she doesn’t think of them as weaknesses. Refreshingly honest when she admits ‘I’m from the mountains and didn’t know proper English, but do I care?’ the 26-year-old charmed her fans thoroughly at the HT City Stars in the City event on Tuesday.
You seem buried under compliments ever since your recent film Queen hit the screens. Whose compliment touched you the most?
I must say the response has been overwhelming. Sometime when I do films that people like, I wonder if I really did well. But, in this case I must say that for everyone related to
, including the director of photography, Bobby Singh, who is no more now, this is their best work so far. It is amazing and I feel that the film completely deserves the kind of attention and success it’s getting. As for compliments, everyone from the industry has been calling. But I was really touched when I got a hand-written note, in orange ink, from Mr Amitabh Bachchan. It had some heavy English words, in his polished English, which I can’t recall right now but I was so, so happy.
At what point during the making of Queen did you start getting remarks that you’re going to sweep all the film awards this time?
You know, honestly, I really don’t want any awards. I’d much rather be at home and cook for myself and my family than sit through those 10 or 15 award functions which have different opinions and go on for hours and hours and you are expected to laugh at those lame jokes and those performances. And the organisers tell you that performances have already happened, so just give us the right reactions for TV. C’mon, it is so lame. I have better things to do in life.
As one of the most punctual stars in Bollywood, what do you have to say to the perpetual latecomers?
Well, I don’t think it’s got anything to do with stardom, you know. Anyone can choose to be late. It’s about their character. I am a sensitive person. I don’t want anyone to wait for me. And I’m like, if you don’t value things, you don’t value people, their time, their emotions, then you don’t deserve my time either.
