Actor Kamaal R Khan is infamous for his rants and controversial statements often made on Twitter. KRK, as he’s better known, has an opinion on pretty much everything. As he gears up to contest the 2014 Lok Sabha elections as an independent candidate, we speak to him about politics and his so-called Bollywood career.
Why do you want to enter politics when you can contribute to society without even being a politician?
How can I do that? Everything has its own place. Politics is important and necessary. Winning is important for me. Only then will I get the funds to work for the area. Apne paise se thodi hoga (It won’t happen with my own money). Let the public decide. I will contest.
Do you think you have a Bollywood career?
Jitna mujhe karna tha, maine kiya (I’ve done how much I wanted to). I came to Bollywood to become famous and I am famous. I do one-two films a year. Maine aur 10 business khol ke rakkhe hain (I’ve started 10 other businesses), I work on them. I get the money. Even if I want, I can’t enter Bollywood 100 per cent. I’m not so free. Every person has a certain target in life.
But people make fun of you behind your back.
I give them a chance to do that. When I wasn’t famous, no one said anything. Today I am famous, so criticism and praise will both come. Maine khud ko famous banaya hain (I’ve made myself famous), so this will happen.
You seem to be imitating Shah Rukh Khan (SRK) with your initials being KRK and by naming your home Jannat (much like SRK’s Mannat).
Main kisi ka fan nahi hoon (I’m nobody’s fan). Now if you’re famous, people will compare you to other stars. Does anyone compare Dino Morea to SRK? No. Mujhme kuch toh baat hogi (there must be something about me), that’s why they compare me. I don’t get angry at all this. It’s people’s job to talk. After all, I have made myself public property.

If you were to get elected, how will you help the film fraternity?
Jo MLA aur MP hain, unhone nahi kiya toh main kya karoonga? (If the MLAs and MPs haven’t, then what will I do?) Halwa hai kya law banana? (Is it easy to make laws?) They will be passed by the Parliament. Bollywood ki awaz uthaunga (I will speak for Bollywood), if they are right. I won’t make false promises. For the last 60 years, people have been doing that.
