While Bollywood actresses lament getting typecast as
's case is different.
The actor who started her career with Dev.D and went on to do movies such as Sahib, Biwi Aur Gangster, Gulaal, Paan Singh Tomar, admits she was relieved to get rid of her 'intense' actor image after getting signed on by director Satish Kaushik for a comedy role.
"When I was in Chandigarh, and dreaming of coming to Bollywood, I never thought I would get to portray such intense and serious roles. I thought I would be offered dancing-around-trees roles. Bollywood loves to typecast actors. In my case, I got a lot of woman-oriented and powerful characters, so I was tagged as a serious actor. I'm glad Satish Kaushik offered me the role of a ghost who does comedy in Gang of Ghosts."
And what exactly is her role in the film? "I play Manoranjana Kumari who believes in manoranjan (entertainment). She is a 1950's actress who is as funny as she's emotional."
Interestingly when Mahie Gill tried to break out of her image as an intense actor, she didn't get much success at the box office. Case in point is Mona Darling in Zanjeer. Does she regret doing the film?
"I don't regret doing Mona Darling. Actually, I don't regret doing anything in life. I learn from every experience. From Mona Darling, I learnt a lot of fashion. I learnt how to dress up when you go meet people. I was this lazy and bindaas person who loved to wear shorts with chappals. Mona darling taught me how to dress up."
Will people love this funny ghost?
Gang of Ghosts, directed by Satish Kaushik also stars Sharman Joshi, Anupam Kher and Meera Chopra hits the theatres on Friday.
