After wooing the audience with fun characters such as KD in Rock On!!, the sinister villain in Awarapan, and most recently, the charming man next door, Shekhar, in Shaadi Ke Side Effects, model-turned-VJ-actor Purab Kohli is back on the big screen. This time, as the lead character, Bakka, in the film Jal that releases on April 4.

Asked how he manages to pull off versatile roles, he says that he only tries to be honest to his part. “I like to get immersed in my roles and become the characters I portray, so that I don’t need to really act anymore, and just be as real as possible,” says the 35-year-old, adding, “I’m also learning that there’s a lot more required from a leading man than just good acting ... especially when marketing a film is concerned.”

Directed by Girish Malik and produced by OneWorld in association with Clapstem Productions and NFDC, and distributed by DAR Film Distributors, Jal also stars actors Kirti Kulhari, Tannishtha Chatterjee, Saidah Jules, Mukul Dev, Yashpal Sharma and Ravi Gossain. “Jal is a story of characters that live in a breathtaking part of this country with low  levels of drinking water. Personally, I’ve been sensitive about the environment since I was a child, and in the film, I play Bakka, the water diviner or paani ka devta, who has an ability to find water in the Rann (of Kutch),” explains Kohli.

The actor will also be seen in two more films this year — Agnidev Chatterjee’s Tere Aane Se and the sequel to Rock On. Talking about the former, he says, “I have four different looks in Tere Aane Se ... my character has four phases in this love story that spans over 30 years.”
