She played Ayushmann Khurrana’s overzealous mother in Vicky Donor (2012), a role which won her a National Award. But not many know that Dolly Ahluwalia also recieved the award previously, for costume design in the film Bandit Queen (1994).

“I am a costume designer first and then an actor. I have had no formal training (in design). Whatever knowledge I have is from the National School of Drama and my personal experiences,” says the actor who has also designed costumes for Love Aaj Kal (2009), Kaminey (2009) and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.

Currently, the actor is looking forward to her newest film, Bajatey Raho. Apparently, the makers changed film’s storyline to complement her character. She says, “I was very thrilled but there was a very strange fear too. The responsibility has also increased.”
