Earlier this year, on film-maker Karan Johar’s chat show, Alia Bhatt said she 'wants to marry Ranbir Kapoor'. In a recent interview to us (published on September 1), Ranbir said she must have been joking; he also showered praise upon the young actor.
With the two now set to work together, Alia clarifies her statement, talks about her eagerness to work with Ranbir, and the alleged ‘ego hassle’ with step-sister Pooja Bhatt.
Earlier this year, on a TV show you said you wanted to marry Ranbir.
I spoke like a fangirl; like I would say, ‘Oh my God, I want to marry Bradley Cooper.’ I didn’t say it with any genuine intention, thinking, ‘Okay, tomorrow, I will go to Ranbir’s house and ask him to marry me.’ Why would I say such a thing on national television? And I didn’t expect people to take it so seriously. I am just a big fan of Ranbir.

You are now set to work with him.
I’m super-excited. I’ve always been open about the fact that I admire Ranbir as an actor, and I’m dying to work with him because I’m going to learn more about acting as a craft (from him). I’m also most excited about working with Ayan (Mukerji; director) because I loved both his films (Wake Up Sid, 2009, and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, 2013). He’s a very dear person.

But even if the whole 'want to marry Ranbir' was said in jest, are there any other actors you find attractive?
It’s too personal a thing. I will tell my best friends who I’m attracted to, but I’m not going to talk about it in a newspaper… It has nothing to do with my work.
There are rumours that you might star in a Hindi remake of The Fault In Our Stars.
No such discussion has happened yet. I read the book a long time back, and loved it. I still haven’t watched the film, though. But as for me doing the remake, I have no information about it.

Recently, reports were rife that there was an ‘ego clash’ between you and Pooja (Bhatt; step sister) when she signed Rahul Bhatt (Pooja's brother) to act in her film?
I didn’t even know about it. I, too, read one article, but let me clarify, I have no ego issues. One day, hopefully, Pooja and I will work together. Just because she is casting Rahul doesn’t mean she has a problem with me. She is doing that film, and it has nothing to do with me.
Your mother also plans to direct you (in an adaptation of Difficult Daughters) in the future. Has there been any development on that?
Right now, she is concentrating on her next film, and I am concentrating on Vikas Bahl’s film. We have had several conversations about it in the past. Whenever it does happen, everyone will know about it.
How is your experience of working with Vikas?
I am excited to work with Vikas. Whenever I tell people that I am doing a film with director of Queen, they are like, ‘Wow, good for you.’ That makes me feel really good and I feel fortunate to be the chosen one.
